Internet access can be a wonderful tool for all
manner of education and fun. Tutoring, learning about other
cultures, gaining hands-on experience in technology, etc. are just a
few of the many advantages the web offers children.
The instinctual trusting nature of children
combined with the anonymity of the Internet makes cyberspace the
perfect target-rich environment for technology-enabled predators.
Chapter 10 is entirely devoted to protecting children on the web.
Web Addicts
There is some debate about whether excessive
Internet use deserves its own addiction label; Internet Addiction.
It has been suggested that the Internet itself is not addicting, but
rather it is personal behavior, which directs online usage or
abuse. The thought being that the person addicted to online
gambling, for instance, is in fact, addicted to gambling not the
Internet and merely uses the web as their vehicle of choice.
What about those who spend hour after hour
online; in chat rooms, playing games, or just simply web surfing?
Over-use of the Internet now has a label, Pathological Internet
Usage (PIU). Honestly answering the following two questions will
allow a person to see if they are at risk:
