Web Stalkers
Chapter 3 -
Web Weirdos

The Pseudo Stalker

There have even been cases of individuals getting into altercations online and attempting to file legal action against another party.  How the legal intricacies of the web develop and what constitutes solid grounds for litigation is for the courts to decide.  A later chapter will explore the internet and the laws in more detail, but for the purposes of this section, suffice it to say, it is always advisable to take the high road when dealing with difficult people online.

One cannot be responsible, if one does the right thing, as hard as that may be from time to time.  As for determining when someone has crossed the line and if legal action has become appropriate, exercise restraint and reserve this option for only the most grievous offenses. Note here, that threats of violence against another person violate the law in any forum and can result in prosecution.

Remember, that while web stalkers may begin communicating in an irritating manner, many will progress to direct threats.  Never dismiss any disturbing or frightening comments as “probably nothing” or “probably harmless.”  Words often lead to actions and all threats, even veiled threats, should be taken extremely seriously.
