Web Stalkers
Chapter 13 - Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

An Alternative View of Spammers

While most people view bulk e-mail as spam, this is not always the case.  There are many businesses, civic groups, charities, political organizations, and other groups which make use of bulk e-mail in order to communicate with their members.

Businesses in particular find the cost-benefit ratio of bulk e-mail to be very favorable, especially when generating sales leads.  The cost of generating a similar number of leads through other means such as telemarketing or direct mail is many times higher.

A positive factor to consider, as the recipient of unsolicited advertising, is that it is quicker and easier to delete an e-mail than it is to wade through piles of actual junk-mail or convince persistent telemarketers that one is not interested in their product or service.

No Free Lunch

Some restaurants enter patrons in a prize drawing as an incentive for completing a survey on the quality of their experience.  One person relayed their story about completing one of these surveys at an upscale restaurant.

This person later received an e-mail message with information regarding an upcoming special event at the restaurant.  The message was sent to everyone who had completed the survey.  Every participant in the survey was listed in the “To” field of the message header.  The result was that more than 100 restaurant patrons now had access to every other e-mail address listed.
