Web Stalkers
Chapter 13 - Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

Using Spam Control Programs

  • Qurb (www.qurb.com)

  • Matador (www.mailfrontier.com/products_matador.html)

These are just a few of the tools at a user’s disposal.  Many of the anti-virus companies also have products in this category.

Using Spam Services

There are services available that offer to help reduce the influx of spam.  These services are not programs installed on an individual computer.  This section will review those services that can be purchased.

Web-based e-mail is very popular, in part because people can access their e-mail from any computer with an Internet connection and a web browser.  This makes anti-spam programs in the previous category ineffective since they run only on a specific computer.

Fortunately, many of the web-based e-mail providers are actively addressing the spam problem.  Some providers allow the user to determine the level of security.  If the user chooses an aggressive strategy, they may inadvertently send some important messages into the spam or trash folder.  If the mistake goes unnoticed and the messages are not removed from the spam or trash folder, they are automatically deleted within a specified number of days.

Another aggressive option is to allow only messages into the Inbox that are on the users list of contacts.  The free web-based e-mail services sometimes limit the number of addresses on that contact list, but that limit is usually generous enough for most people.
