Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks

Remedies for Virus Attacks

Regardless of all these efforts, it is conceivable that something could happen.  Should that unfortunate event occur, repair and restoration will be necessary.

Watch for some of these indicators that a virus may have made it past a computer’s defenses:

  • The computer is running more slowly than normal.

  • There seems to be activity on the hard drive, even when the computer is apparently idle.

  • Other email users may give notification that they have received a strange or unusual email that appears to have been sent by a particular user.

  • Receiving emails from others complaining they have been infected with a virus from a particular user’s machine.

However, these kinds of occurrences do not necessarily mean a virus has infiltrated the system.  An active hard drive could be the result of a pre-scheduled utility performing a routine of some kind.  A computer running more slowly than usual may have other explanations as well.  A new program could be bogging the system down and slowing the process, but if these explanations do not apply, or if multiple symptoms begin to occur at one time, the best course of action is outlined below.

  • Make sure anti virus software is installed and running the latest version with the virus definitions updated.

  • Make sure all security patches and updates for the operating system have been downloaded and installed.

  • Check to see that the latest version of the web browser in use has been installed.

  • Shut down the computer’s ability to access the Internet whenever a connection is not needed.

  • Power down the computer completely.

  • Get in touch with antivirus software vendor support center for further instructions.
