Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks
Backups and Web Safety
A successful virus attack can damage or erase
files that may or may not be recoverable by an antivirus program.
If data is damaged or lost and cannot be repaired or restored, the
only option remaining is the use of backup files. Backup files
contain important data that has been copied ahead of time and stored
outside of the computer. These files need to be thorough, current
and represent all the important data that has just been lost to a
virus. While backup files require time and effort to replace, they
prevent data from being lost.
Having those backup files ready to go when they
are needed means following a strict data back-up regimen. This is
not as hard as it sounds because it can be scheduled to be performed
automatically by the operating system.
There was a time when performing a full system
backup on a regular basis was impractical for the home computer
user. The storage medium available just made it too impractical and
time consuming. Anyone remember being asked to insert backup disk
number 65? That is not an issue today, and there is no excuse for
not having thorough and recent backups of everything. The advent of
the writable DVD and CD ROM drives has made storage of huge amounts
of data relatively simple. If a computer is not equipped with
either of these drives, it is likely they will have a USB port,
which will support a USB flash drive able to hold up to 256 MB or
more.
