Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks

Virus Prevention Software

The illustration below, Fig. 12.2, shows the summary box utilized by Sophos Anti-Virus.  In this example, two viruses have been located and information about each of them and the circumstances of their detection are displayed.  The option of what to do with the viruses is provided, and a cleaning or purging utility is usually run to remove the viruses from the system.  If there are damaged or infected files, the program can repair or purge them and restore them for use.

The importance of updating antivirus software regularly is stressed by Kraft, “Your antivirus software is only as good as your most recent update.”  This makes a straightforward and intuitive update process imperative.  A program that allows for scheduling of automatic updates to be downloaded and installed without any input from the user is the best option for many people.  A program with an ungainly update procedure will likely be neglected, with potentially disastrous results.

Software Best Practices

As previously mentioned, keeping antivirus software updated is vital.  The updates however, are usually only available via a subscription service.  When the program is purchased and registered at installation, the owner is automatically enrolled in the subscription service for a period of time, usually 12 months.  During that period, the software can be updated at any time.

At the end of that period, however, updates will no longer be available.  Attempting to update beyond that time will result in a message stating that the subscription service has expired.  Usually, a link is provided to a website where the software can be renewed on the spot.  Anyone tempted to save the cash and not renew the subscription should reconsider.  An unprotected computer is an infected computer.  It’s just that simple.
