The eCommerce revolution is also creating new industries such as Cybercash, a service for collecting funds from online shopping carts, and expanding existing industries such as web hosting and email services.  The postal industry, including package delivery services, has benefited significantly from eCommerce as millions of new customers start shopping online each year.

The next section provides a review of some of the common perceived risks with eCommerce and then examines the positive role that online shopping has played in 21st Century society.

The Risks of eCommerce

Still, there are many people who fear the anonymity of the Internet and the risks of giving out their private contact and credit card information on a faceless web form.  From computer scientists to laymen, there seems to be a generic fear of the web and the daily news reports of web scams fuel the uncertainty and doubt among the consumers.

Real-world case – The “actual size” deception

Even the savviest consumer can get taken on the web, especially when dealing with an unknown seller.  The explosion of web portals that claim to be “the worlds largest flea market” have also become the “world’s largest source of consumer deception.” 

The following is a story that demonstrates how easy it is to be deceived online. A man who was an avid clock collector also considered himself to be aware of the subtle scams employed by most private sellers on the web.
