Web Stalkers
Chapter 7 -
Internet Scams

The Horrors of Internet Fraud

Phineas T. Barnum remarked “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Scammers are constantly trying out new methods and techniques for deception, and the potential gullibility and greed of Internet users is a great asset in this pursuit. When a new scam proves itself to be successful, it will spread across the globe like wildfire.  The IC3 tracks new web scams and attempts to classify them.  Whenever a new scam is detected, it is named and an alert is issued.

The next section explores the world of the web scammer to see how they operate.

Inside the World of the Web Scammer

The temptation to scam from people in wealthy nations is too strong to resist.  Even highly religious people in third world countries will justify their thievery by rationalizing that their wealthy victims have too much money.  Ironically, many scammers adopt the same mindset as their victims, believing that they deserve the money.

By many estimates, Internet scams are a multi-billion dollar business which attracts criminals from all over the world. According to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) records of complaints, the following are the top 10 internet frauds committed in 2004 along with some advice from the FTC for how to avoid becoming a victim:

  • Internet auction fraud - Consumers say they've received an item that is less valuable than promised or don't receive the item at all.
