Chapter 10 - Ease of Administration
Conclusion
Administering an Oracle database environment
requires dozens of different support activities to be performed on a
daily basis. The more structured and formalized the support
activities are, the fewer problems they cause. A review of some of
the important points covered in this chapter follows:
-
Don’t skimp on
documentation. It may be boring, but it is important. A
robust, detailed documentation library creates an environment that
is less complex, less error-prone, reduces the amount of time DBAs
spend learning new database environments and reduces the overall
time spent on day-to-day support activities.
-
Design and implement standardized work request
documents to increase the quality of the change request process.
-
Repeatable processes reduce the level of
administrative errors. If a set of steps works right one time,
there is a good chance that it will work correctly the next.
-
The more complex a particular task is the
greater the need for thorough documentation.
-
Internal service level agreements help database
administration teams understand what their customers expect from
them.
In our last chapter, we discuss Oracle
security.
