Chapter 3: Conclusions

Tuning disk interfaces generally involves controlling the number of commands that are sent to each disk on the interface.  These commands are controlled via the mechanism of queued command depths where the number of commands sent to either a bus or device is preset to prevent command overflows. Another setting throttles the total flow of commands on the bus to individual devices and provides for load balancing (sd_max_throttle for example).  When the disk interface senses errors, it usually throttles back to the minimal settings (usually 1), which can severely inhibit performance.
