Chapter 11 Oracle Fine Grained Auditing

method does not require any extensive reorganization of table.

A suggestion of archival and purging can be obtained from the same topic in Chapter 8 on Oracle Auditing.

Conclusion

In this chapter, we saw how to use a very powerful tool called Fine Grained Auditing (FGA), introduced in Oracle 9i, to record SELECT statements issued by users. The auditing can be limited to events triggered by specific values in the selected data, or in the specific columns selected, giving the tool a distinct edge in specialized auditing, which was otherwise impossible.

We also saw how to extend the functionality of the tool to cases where the database user is not relevant, such as in case of application-authenticated users. Using application contexts and client identifiers, we learned to capture the statements, too.

Finally, we saw how to use another valuable tool provided by Oracle 9i, Flashback Queries, to identify not only what the user wanted to see, but what he or she actually saw at that time. This makes it possible to assign accountability to an even greater degree. With this chapter, we complete the section on auditing.

So far, we have explored the various features and tools within Oracle related to security and auditing. In the next chapter, we will bring all the previous chapters together to see how the tools can be used to achieve the security and auditing requirement specifically from the HIPAA perspective.
